For many, personalised number plates are of paramount importance; a proclamation of individuality not to mention a great investment.
Not only do they exert a pull on buyers throughout the land; the perceptive amongst us perceive them as a valid alternative to hoarding money in the bank.
Private number plates may seem to be an obscure type of investment, but if you scratch the surface and view the facts and figures - it is no surprise then that this trade, which has turned over an incredible £1.68 billion in the past 20 years, is showing no signs of slowing down.
The important thing to remember here is that investment is not just about money put aside in a saving account, stocks shares, ISA’s – a less traditional way ‘to put money aside’ in a relatively risk free way is investing in the right number plate, and if you play your cards right, you can certainly maximize your investment.
The boom in personalised plates goes back to the late 80s. Such was the lively second-hand trade of cherished registrations, the DVLA decided to take charge of issuing and marketing the number plates instead. Today they stock an estimated 25 million number plates.
The most expensive number plate in the UK is F1, purchased for a cool £460,000 by Afzal Kahn in 2008.
As if that wasn’t enough, at a recent DVLA auction in Leeds, Afzal Kahn purchased the 18O number plate for £50,000. Fees and the VAT rate bumped the total price to over £60,000!
Such financial clout could hardly have been conceived when the first ever number plate to have been issued in the UK was released.
Little wonder then that this trade is not only a lucrative business for the DVLA and off course, the Treasury. Hundreds of companies buy and sell the plates for big profits. And often viewed as a "total vanity" purchase, a personalised plate can be a shrewd investment "if bought wisely".
And if you want to know about the ultimate number plate collection – look no further. From the regal 4 HRH number to the footballers S50 CER and F00 7IE numbers to the 00 77, 4K and 4 AK number plates - Afzal Kahn’s very own collection did not come together overnight, he spent a meticulous amount of time sourcing prestigious numbers.
